about

DS017

Towering ambience paints the passing of a day from the perspective of a distorted and phlegmatic mind.

Decaying Spheres welcome Bonzaii back with the Hamburg-based artist’s second release on the label, a momentous exploration of consciousness in the throes of delusion.

Documenting the progression from the start of the day to the fall of night, Das Dämmern Der Welt – as its title would suggest – presents the world when looked at through a glass darkly. Translating to ‘The Twilight World’, the artist pulls from an array of samples enlarged to a dizzying magnitude to portray an obscured soundscape, inspired by Werner Herzog’s book of the same name.

On the aptly-named Fugue, a solitary string sequence wades through a carefully engineered silence. A ghostly sense of doom hangs in the periphery of the track’s beginning, never pervasive enough to terrify, but disorientating as surroundings begin to flicker and oscillate wildly. Bonzaii stays this encroaching dread, as if just in the corner of the listener’s eye wherever they look.

This experience is an introspective one, the artist lovingly crafting a sense of numbness throughout Das Dämmern Der Welt that indicates confusion but also the warmth and reassurance of a personal perspective. This results in heady, emotional sequences, like in Semi-Darkness as fragile streams of sound are gradually set upon by a juddering dissonance that blurs the soundscape before the listener. Before each element succumbs to this steady rhythmic charge. Bonzaii presents a general atmosphere of euphoria, co-opted by something hypnotic using coarse sonic textures.

At its core, Das Dämmern Der Welt radiates an aura of ambivalence. Too powerful to succumb to inertia, Bonzaii’s creations are constantly evolving, moving from epiphany to sombre realisation with the weightiness and patience that such fluidity deserves.

In Das Dämmern Der Welt, Decaying Spheres welcome a tribute to an artistic pioneer, an exploration of a worryingly relatable delusion and a feat of sonic majesty.
